Easter Sunrise

The sun rises as it does
every day
you and I know
and the astronomers too.

My parents told me that
long ago a man died who
was more than… but they said
we don’t really know;

And others said that
his father had him killed
because I make mistakes,
so I should feel good

About that, but I don’t.
I think that
I need to atone, and don’t
want anyone’s son killed

Because of me; and I know
I will always make mistakes
but try to make it better,
while I know I can’t.

So I walk across the grass
and see a sparrow, fallen
to the ground and pick it up,
and gently stroke its soft

Feathers and speak softly
to its sparrow spirit
in the morning’s sunrays,
until the breath goes away.
