Flat

a love poem

Your text words were
flat just as
they always were.
Flat like the

computer screen,
like the paper;
like a flat tire,
all the air gone.

I heard
emptiness, heard
lack of heart
lack of soul.

It was
not always so;
at times
your voice

could be sweet
and you would even gasp,
so I didn’t have to ask
was it good for you.

Your words were flat
and it took me two tries
to trust myself again because
I wondered how I could have,

Wondered how, though I wanted to say
I’m sorry, it was my fault;
but I wanted to ask how, how
I ever fell in love with you.
