Hi Carol. You are a good writer. I think you are right. Of course Medium is making a profit. It is NOT a non-profit. It is a Ponzi or Pyramid scheme, and all those of us who try to follow their algorithm just make money for Medium. Some folks evidently make lots of money, but I don't write that way. I am not a membership salesman. I write what I do because I love to write and try to always write well. I make no money doing this, although I am on the way to publish a collection of my short stories. It will likely not make much money unless I am lucky, even though some people say I write well, and I have a moral and purpose to my writing. That is not how money-making enetrprises work. Most people will never make much money writing. I keep doing because I love it, but Medium mainly helps whoever owns and manages it.
