Interesting article. Some good points. Also possible, and have said this before and have not yet been blocked, I think (I am a paying member) that Medium is sort of a big semi-literary Ponzi scheme. New members, and old, keep paying into the pot, members are promised to make a lot of money, but most do not. But it keeps growing because of everyone's hope of making a lot of money with their writing.
