On Moving and Socks
One of the precepts, or rules, of physics which I recall from school or some magazine article I read while waiting for the dentist, is: matter can be neither created nor destroyed. If anyone with a science background is foolish enough to read this, they may easily find fault with my reasoning, logic or statements, however, I am genuinely concerned about what I have observed.
What amazes me is how many unpaired socks I have found while cleaning and packing for another move (19). This may well be related to a phenomenon I recently read online (sorry, I do not remember the author, it could have been someone’s blog): two socks go into the dryer but only one comes out! The author questioned if one of the socks simply disappeared. As I am meticulous in counting and accounting for my socks, I have spent many frustrating hours trying to understand this. It is important to me because I truly value socks. When I used to wear a shirt and tie to work, I learned to match the shirt and tie and socks. So, if I had a solid color shirt, the tie and socks could be pattern but the colors should somehow match. In reverse, a pattern shirt needed a tie and socks with matching color, somehow, but should be a solid color. I always tried to make it work and accumulated a collection of nice colored socks as well as boring white socks. Still, so far I have been unable to find an explanation.
